House of Historic or Architectural Interest

Standen

A late Victorian country estate built for the Beale family, with unspoilt views across to the Ashdown Forest. Designed by Philip Webb, the house is one of the finest examples of Arts & Crafts workmanship with Morris & Co. interiors and decorative art of the period. The 12 acre hillside gardens are returning to their 1920’s glory, providing year round interest and an award winning plant collection.  On the wider estate, footpaths lead out into the woodlands and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty. Cafe, shop, plant centre and secondhand garden bookshop. Year round events and activity programme.
