Calke Abbey

This attraction was nominated by Kath @KathH3

First mystery solved – it’s not an abbey! (But on the site of a mediaeval religious house) It’s a 243-hectare National Nature Reserve, a huge park with deer enclosure, a Garden of Imagination for children, walled gardens, a grotto … and a house which is not your standard stately home by any means. The National Trust have ‘repaired rather than restored’ it, leaving many rooms exactly as they found them (but made safe) while putting some of them back more or less the way they would have been when the Harpur Crewe family owned it. Far too many stuffed birds and animals for my liking though
