Exeter Cathedral

Entrance is FREE!

Founded in 1050, it was established to provide support for the Bishop of Exeter in his ministry and mission across Devon, and to be a community of prayer, and christian worship.  It is a place where we proclaim the glory of God and seek to live our lives in Christian worship.   Over the centuries, the Cathedral has reached out to the various communities within the city, the county and the country.  Today, these groups include Christians and non-Christians, those on a journey of faith, scholars and tourists as well as children being introduced to the purpose of the Cathedral through education and play.  We intend the Cathedral not just to be a beautiful and historic building but a place of coming together in national and personal celebration and a crossroads where the sacred and the secular meet. In order to nourish the body and nurture the soul, it is our vision to develop an environment where the whole range of sensory experiences can be enjoyed by all – music, architecture, art, literature and food and drink. The Cathedral is the symbolic focus for the Bishop of Exeter’s ministry and it is where his Cathedra (or chair) is kept. This means that it is the main place where he calls the Diocese together and fulfils his ministry of teaching and being a focus of unity for the Church of England in Devon.
