Random Brown Sign of the Moment

This Random Brown Sign nomination comes from Yorkshire. Mo and Steve added it to my website this morning and after reading their blog on their experiences at Brockadale Nature Reserve I thought it deserved a proper mention.

Just FYI Mo and Steve’s blog A Small Holding is a great place to read about the life you wish you had, a life closer to nature, in the outdoors growing your own vegetables, keeping your own rare breed pigs and not having to rely on the bloody supermarket.

This is what they had to say about Brockadale…

I’ve walked Brockadale since the days when I had to be lifted onto Dad’s shoulders because my little legs were tired. I’ve had picnics on the Crags that are now fenced off to the Public.

Now, it is my husband who is carrying his Grandchildren on his shoulders.

It’s a tranquil place with a meandering river, meadows and woodlands… you could stay all day.

Yet another gorgeous and special place to be found along The Brown Sign way…

Brockadale Nature Reserve

Note: Entrance is FREE

Brockadale is a Nature Reserve of theYorkshire Wildlife Trust and lies between the villages of Wentbridge and the Smeatons just to the east of the A1, 10 miles north of Doncaster. Its name derives from ‘broken dale’, aptly describing the craggy outcrops of limestone which dominate parts of the reserve. Many of the steep-sided slopes are covered in semi-natural woodland, or meadows which have been long unploughed. Brockadale became a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve in 1966, but with several extensions is now about 2km long and covers much of the valley between Wentbridge and the Smeatons. Most of this beautiful reserve is classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The reserve has one of only two sites in England where a minute snail called Truncatellina cylindrica can be found.
